Ableton Live 12.3 Beta: AI Stems and Splice Collide to Redefine Music Production

ai stems revolutionize music production

While digital audio workstations continue to evolve with technological advancements, Ableton has revealed its latest update that substantially transforms music production capabilities. The Live 12.3 beta introduces AI-powered stem separation technology, developed in partnership with Music AI, creators of the Moises app used by over 65 million artists worldwide. This groundbreaking feature allows producers to split any audio clip into separate vocals, bass, drums, and other components directly within Arrangement, Session View, or Browser with just a few clicks.

Ableton’s Live 12.3 beta revolutionizes production with AI stem separation, empowering producers to isolate vocals, bass, and drums with unprecedented ease.

The stem separation process operates entirely on users’ local machines, eliminating privacy concerns while ensuring swift processing without cloud dependencies. Producers can now isolate vocals for sampling, extract percussion elements for creating new drum patterns, or separate basslines for audio to MIDI conversion, all within their existing workflow. This technology represents a significant leap forward in remix and production capabilities for Ableton users. Advanced users can enhance stem quality by creating an options.ext text file in the Ableton preferences folder.

Complementing the stem separation feature, Live 12.3 integrates Splice’s extensive library of royalty-free samples directly into Live’s Browser. This integration enables users to search, filter, and audition Splice samples in perfect sync with their project’s tempo and key. The innovative “Search with Sound” feature allows producers to find rhythmically and harmonically matching samples by capturing audio from their project or dragging clips into Splice’s panel, streamlining the creative process. For optimal sound quality, producers should consider incorporating quality audio interfaces into their setup, ensuring clean signal flow between their computer and studio monitors. Once finished, artists can distribute their completed tracks to multiple streaming platforms including Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube Music, and Tidal to maximize audience reach.

The update also expands Live’s MIDI toolkit with new generators and improved sequencing capabilities. The Generators Pack introduces “Sting,” an acid bassline generator, while the updated Patterns device produces complex rhythmic structures. Sequencers now follow arrangement position rather than resetting, enhancing synchronization during production. The new Auto Pan-Tremolo device provides enhanced spatial movement and rhythmic effects through its reimagined tabbed interface design.

Additional workflow improvements include Bounce Groups and Paste Bounced Audio functions, simplifying the editing process for producers. Available as a free point release for Live 12 Suite owners, this update firmly positions Ableton at the intersection of artificial intelligence and music production.
