After three years since their expansive double album, indie folk band Big Thief has announced their sixth studio album, *Double Infinity*, set for release on September 5, 2025, through the label 4AD. The album, which follows 2022’s acclaimed *Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You*, was recorded during winter 2024 at New York City’s Power Station studio, marking a new chapter in the band’s evolving sound.
*Double Infinity* represents a significant change for Big Thief, as it’s their first album recorded primarily as a core trio following bassist Max Oleartchik’s departure. The nine-track collection features lead single “Incomprehensible,” alongside tracks “All Night All Day” and the album’s title track.
Despite the reduced core lineup of Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia, the album incorporates contributions from eleven session musicians, including jazz bassist Joshua Crumbly, who has since joined the band’s live lineup. The band’s decision to leverage session musicians allows them to maintain their rich sound while creating a reliable income stream for fellow artists in the industry.
The album’s sound marks a deliberate departure from Big Thief’s earlier work, blending late ’80s and early ’90s pop influences with their established Americana roots. “All Night All Day,” described as having a “windswept dreamlike shimmer,” explores themes of love and desire, while the overall album incorporates ambient and jazz elements through collaborations with musicians like Laraaji and singers Alena Spanger, Hannah Cohen, and June McDoom.
Following the album’s release, Big Thief will initiate their ambitious *Somersault Slide 360* North American tour, playing their largest headline shows to date. The tour includes performances at prestigious venues like the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Forest Hills Stadium in New York, and their Mexico City debut at Teatro Metropolitan. The band also plans to leverage streaming platform features to connect with fans unable to attend live performances, offering exclusive behind-the-scenes content. The tour will culminate in Houston on November 7, 2025, offering fans across the continent opportunities to experience their new sound. The band also recently released their Passional Relations EP to support Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts.
The shift to a trio with expanded session musician support reflects both continuity and transformation within the band’s history. This more concise work, following several solo projects by band members between 2022 and 2024, suggests a deliberate evolution in Big Thief’s creative approach, with early singles already receiving positive attention for their fresh sound.
