Spotify’s Licensing Chief David Kaefer Steps Down as Veteran Charlie Hellman Takes the Helm

kaefer resigns hellman appointed

Kaefer, who has held his current title since December 2023, played a pivotal role in shaping Spotify‘s position in the global licensing landscape and was instrumental in launching the company’s audiobook business in 2023.

Kaefer’s leadership reshaped Spotify’s global licensing strategy while spearheading their successful audiobook venture in 2023.

During his tenure, he oversaw music licensing and partnership strategy while managing Editorial, Partnerships, and Go-to-Market functions, steering complex industry deals that expanded Spotify’s content portfolio.

Charlie Hellman, a company veteran since 2011 who founded Spotify’s US product team, has been named Senior Vice President and Global Head of Music, succeeding Kaefer.

This appointment signals continuity in leadership for the music business, with Hellman set to oversee global music licensing and partnerships. The change comes at a strategic time as Spotify prepares for broader leadership shifts, including Daniel Ek’s upcoming move to Executive Chairman in 2026.

The October 1 announcement reflects Spotify’s evolving focus on integrating its music and audiobook offerings in an increasingly competitive digital content market.

Norström’s internal memo emphasized the company’s commitment to continuing innovation under the new leadership structure.

Industry observers note that these changes represent a maturing corporate structure at Spotify as it maneuvers through the complex streaming landscape.

Kaefer’s contributions to both the music and audiobook sectors have been significant during his time at Spotify, enhancing the company’s relationships with music rights holders and supporting editorial curation and market execution strategies that have helped maintain Spotify’s position as a leading audio streaming platform globally.

His expertise in developing sync deals for artists has been particularly valuable for musicians looking to diversify their revenue streams beyond streaming royalties alone.

After seven years of service, Kaefer will officially exit Spotify at the end of October 2025, having joined the company in 2018 as VP, Global Leader, Business Affairs.

This transition occurs shortly after Spotify and Merlin secured a multi-year licensing deal that strengthens the platform’s relationship with independent music distributors.

Under Hellman’s leadership, Spotify is expected to continue expanding its playlist pitching opportunities, which have become crucial for independent artists seeking to gain visibility on the platform.
