Sad news has struck the heavy metal community as Allen Blickle, co-founder and original drummer of the acclaimed band Baroness, has died at the age of 42. The band confirmed the news through an official statement, triggering an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow musicians alike.
The metal world mourns as Baroness co-founder Allen Blickle passes at 42, leaving behind a profound legacy.
Blickle helped establish Baroness in 2003 in Savannah, Georgia, alongside frontman John Baizley, quickly becoming recognized for his distinctive drumming style that helped shape the band’s early sound. During his decade-long tenure with the group, he contributed greatly to their first three studio albums: *Red Album* (2007), *Blue Record* (2009), and *Yellow & Green* (2012), each receiving critical acclaim within metal circles.
The drummer’s career took a challenging turn in August 2012 when Baroness was involved in a serious bus accident while touring Europe, resulting in substantial injuries for Blickle including broken bones. By early 2013, he departed from the band, marking a major change in Baroness’ lineup and musical direction.
In the years following his exit from Baroness, Blickle remained musically active, performing with groups including Romantic Dividends, A Place To Bury Strangers, and Alpaca. He also expanded his creative portfolio by moving into sound design for television, film, and video games, building a respected reputation across multiple entertainment industries. Many colleagues noted his dedication to focused practice sessions even when working on diverse projects outside the drumming world.
While no official cause of death has been publicly disclosed, tributes from close associates suggest Blickle had been struggling with ongoing pain. Laura Pleasants of Kylesa shared a personal message indicating he had faced considerable physical challenges prior to his passing. News of his death first spread when Pleasants posted a heartfelt Instagram tribute on September 7, 2025. Producer John Congleton noted how he had been fortunate to catch up with Blickle earlier this year before his untimely death.
Following the 2012 accident, Blickle reportedly focused on proper ergonomics and posture when drumming to manage his injuries and prevent further complications. Baizley expressed profound shock and grief at the loss of his former bandmate, emphasizing the deep creative partnership and friendship they had shared during their formative years.
“Allen was more than just our drummer; he was integral to our artistic vision and journey,” Baizley noted in his tribute.
Blickle leaves behind a notable legacy as an influential figure in modern metal, remembered for both his technical proficiency and creative contributions to the genre.
