Furious Busta Rhymes Strikes Back With Defamation Countersuit Against Ex-Assistant’S Assault Allegations

busta rhymes countersues ex assistant

Hip-hop icon Busta Rhymes has launched a scathing counterattack against his former assistant, filing a defamation lawsuit in Brooklyn federal court that vehemently denies all allegations of assault, underpayment, and creating a hostile work environment.

The rapper’s legal response comes after Dashiel Gables, who worked for him from July 2024 until early 2025, sought between $6 million and $7 million in damages for alleged mistreatment.

In his countersuit, Busta Rhymes accuses Gables of acting with “actual malice” by fabricating stories about his conduct. The rapper claims these false allegations have cost him significant advertising campaigns and business opportunities, damaging his reputation and goodwill in both the music and advertising industries.

Gables had previously alleged that Busta Rhymes physically assaulted him, claiming he was punched multiple times during his employment. The accusations led to criminal charges of third-degree assault against the rapper following Gables’ police report.

Additionally, Gables asserted he worked 15 to 18 hours daily, seven days a week, at a flat rate of $200 per day without overtime pay or proper wage documentation.

The former assistant’s lawsuit further detailed disturbing claims, including allegations that Busta Rhymes forced him to unclog a toilet by hand and subjected him to routine verbal abuse and humiliation. Gables also claims he has been blacklisted from the Hip-Hop industry since reporting the alleged misconduct.

Busta Rhymes’ legal strategy hinges on portraying Gables as deliberately fabricating these claims with reckless disregard for the truth. His attorneys argue that Gables omitted exculpatory facts and ignored contrary evidence when making his accusations. Attorney J. Patrick Butler has explicitly stated that the rapper did not engage in any of the alleged wrongdoing. One specific incident in question allegedly occurred in January 2025, where Gables claims he was subjected to verbal scolding and assault.

This legal battle comes at a time when many artists are turning to diverse income streams to mitigate financial risks associated with reputational damage.

The rapper is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, along with repayment of legal fees incurred. His counterclaim also demands a public retraction of all allegations made against him.

The case is currently progressing through the discovery phase, with both parties preparing to present evidence supporting their claims.

Industry insiders note that allegations like these can severely impact an artist’s ability to build their personal brand, which is crucial for long-term success in the music business.
