British indie rock veterans The Futureheads are breaking new ground this holiday season with their first-ever Christmas album, aptly titled *Christmas*, set for release on November 21.
The album, which was recorded over nine months in Sunderland, features a carefully curated mix of reimagined Christmas classics and original compositions, showcasing the band’s signature indie style.
Blending beloved holiday standards with fresh creations, The Futureheads infuse their distinctive Sunderland energy into a thoughtfully crafted yuletide collection.
The 11-track collection includes the band’s take on beloved carols such as “Carol of the Bells” and “In The Bleak Midwinter,” alongside covers of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” The Pretenders’ “2000 Miles,” and Jona Lewie’s “Stop the Cavalry.”
The Futureheads have also contributed two original tracks to the festive canon: “The Coldest Winter in 100 Years” and “Christmas Was Better in the 80s,” with the latter accompanied by a music video that captures the band’s playful energy and nostalgic celebration of 1980s festive culture.
The inspiration for the album emerged following the band’s return to live performances, particularly Christmas concerts in North East England.
All tracks were self-produced, arranged, and recorded by the band, resulting in an authentic and intimate sound that reflects their long-standing collaboration and chemistry.
The band has ensured each track contains precise metadata accuracy to maximize visibility across streaming platforms and facilitate proper royalty collection.
To support the release, The Futureheads have announced a December UK tour, bringing their holiday songs to audiences across the country.
Confirmed dates include shows at Glasgow’s Oran Mor on December 8, Sunderland’s The Fire Station on December 19 and 20, and London’s EartH Theatre on December 22.
The album is currently available for pre-order, with the band inviting fans to join a Discord discussion thread for further interaction.
Through this festive project, The Futureheads are not only celebrating the holiday season but also commemorating their longevity and ongoing creativity as a band, demonstrating their commitment to creating unique music that honors both tradition and innovation, while maintaining the distinctive sound that has defined their career.
The band is exploring sync deals for their Christmas tracks, potentially bringing their festive sounds to holiday commercials and television programs.
The album was remarkably recorded during a summer heatwave, creating a unique contrast between the sweltering studio conditions and the wintry themes of their festive tracks.
Fans will be treated to the band’s rendition of “What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas, adding a playful twist to their holiday repertoire.
