As the MTV Video Music Awards prepares to celebrate its milestone 40th anniversary on September 7, 2025, production designers have revealed plans for what may be the most ambitious stage setup in the show’s storied history.

Dominated by a towering 60-foot Moon Person statue emerging from a massive video wall, the UBS Arena in New York will transform into a multimedia spectacle blending four decades of VMA nostalgia with cutting-edge technology.

The innovative design features two primary stages, each measuring 60 feet wide by 40 feet deep, complemented by a central fan stage positioned directly beneath the Moon Person statue. This colossal centerpiece will serve double duty as both iconic symbol and projection canvas, displaying memorable VMA moments spanning the event’s 40-year legacy.

A fourth performance area, dubbed the Fandom Stage, consists of a 24’x16′ mechanical lift that will rise 19 feet, dramatically revealing artists in the midst of the audience. Performers will be framed by integrated LED floors and bi-parting video walls that create dynamic backdrops for each act.

Legendary rapper and actor LL COOL J has been tapped to host the anniversary celebration, which will feature performances from contemporary stars and music veterans alike.

The eclectic lineup includes pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, viral breakthrough artist Sombr, social media phenom turned musician Alex Warren, and Latin superstar J Balvin collaborating with DJ Snake.

Adding to the night’s star power, hip-hop icon Busta Rhymes and crossover sensation Ricky Martin will deliver special performances celebrating the show’s rich history.

The production team has integrated extensive projection mapping, mechanized stage elements, and synchronized lighting to create immersive environments tailored to each performer’s unique aesthetic. Artists have been advised to conduct thorough venue rehearsals to maximize their connection with the audience in this complex multi-stage environment.

“This design intentionally bridges VMA history with tomorrow’s entertainment landscape,” explained a production spokesperson, noting how the multiple stages will foster unprecedented audience interaction.

The 2025 VMAs will broadcast live on CBS on September 7 at 8/7c, featuring fan voting across categories and interactive social media elements designed to engage both in-person and at-home audiences in what promises to be a landmark celebration of music video culture. The ceremony continues the tradition of public voting participation that began in 2006 when MTV first allowed viewers to vote for their favorite videos online.

For the performing artists, MTV has created comprehensive promotional packages including social media advertising campaigns across platforms to maximize viewer engagement and tune-in rates.
