After guitarist Steve Jones suffered a broken wrist just days before their enthusiastically anticipated comeback, The Sex Pistols have postponed their entire 2025 North and South American tour, marking a significant setback for what would have been the legendary punk band’s first U.S. performances in 22 years.
The band made the official announcement on September 2, 2025, through their social media channels, delivering disappointing news to fans who had been waiting over two decades for their return.
Jones, who was about to turn 70 around the time of the announcement, shared both his frustration about the postponement and optimism regarding his recovery. According to his statement, his surgeon expects him to return to playing guitar “in the not-too-distant future,” though specific recovery timelines remain unclear.
The injury occurred mere days before the tour was set to begin on September 16, 2025, at Dallas’s historic Longhorn Ballroom.
The tour was particularly significant as it would have brought the Sex Pistols back to the Longhorn Ballroom, site of their infamous 1978 performance where the band faced a hostile crowd that threw objects at them during their set. During that notorious performance, the band was pelted with pigs’ hooves and bottles by an unruly audience.
Additional stops on the canceled itinerary included Brooklyn, Toronto, Detroit, Seattle, and Los Angeles, with the tour originally scheduled to run from mid-September to mid-October.
The 2025 lineup featured the band’s classic instrumental core with Steve Jones on guitar, Paul Cook on drums, and Glen Matlock on bass, though original vocalist John Lydon was not participating.
Frank Carter had stepped in as the tour vocalist, replacing Lydon who has been estranged from the band since 1978 and involved in legal disputes over the band’s legacy. The band’s legal tensions intensified when Lydon attempted to block Hulu’s miniseries based on Jones’ memoir.
The band had invested significant time in thorough rehearsals to prepare for the comeback performances, making the last-minute cancellation even more disappointing for both the musicians and fans.
The band assured ticket holders that their purchases would remain valid for the rescheduled dates, which will be announced once Jones has fully recovered.
The postponement represents a significant financial blow for the band, who would have generated substantial revenue through merchandise sales at these high-profile reunion shows.
Fans have been directed to follow venue websites and the band’s official social media accounts for updates on the postponed performances, as the punk icons promise to return once Jones is medically cleared to perform.
